Why Role-Play Matters in the Corporate Workplace

In the workplace, people are expected to handle tricky, high-pressure conversations - with no guarantee how the other person will respond. When they’re simply dropped into those moments, it’s natural to feel awkward, nervous or unsure, and that hesitation can affect both individual performance and wider business outcomes. Role-play gives people the chance to practise these conversations in a safe, realistic setting - helping people learn to think clearly under pressure and communicate with intention. Instead of hoping it goes well on the day, they walk in having already tried it, adjusted, and built genuine confidence.

Participants have the opportunity to work as a team to conduct workplace conversations, thereby learning from each other in real time what works and doesn’t work.

A scenario performed by actors, where participants can stop the action, suggest changes, or even step in to try a different approach - thereby removing passivity and encouraging ownership of solutions and outcomes.

We are flexible in our approach to role play. Our scenarios can be tailored to your culture, values, and objectives. Bespoke/tailored scenarios will reflect your reality, rather than generic case studies.

We begin with a consultation where we ask questions and listening carefully, until you feel we truly understand your organisation and it’s requirements. We then write and develop custom scenarios, scripts and delivery methods, working alongside you to ensure they are fully realistic, relevant and effective.

We would offer an initial free 60 minute taster session that centres around what’s known as the ‘fishbowl exercise’. The sessions includes:

  • A brief interactive discussion on the importance of active listening, body language and communication

  • Participants would then observe and analyse an ineffective example of a workplace conversation (usually a colleague check-in or a client interaction).

  • They would then have the opportunity themselves to step in and interact as a group with the actors, based on both their observations and their own experiences.

  • This turns a single conversation into a powerful shared learning experience, where they can observe in real time what works, what shifts the dynamic, and what changes the outcome.

At the end of the session participants will have watched and participated in simulated scenarios, explored how different approaches can impact workplace interactions, and gained an understanding of some of the skills required for effective communication.

Simulate a scenario to test the ability of potential new recruits or candidates for promotion in handling certain commonplace interactions that come with the role - which you can then assess.

Participants prepare an example workplace interaction and work with the actor to recreate the scenario, inviting participants to adjust their approach, body language and speech - helping them to understand the impact of their behaviour and communication style on others.
